真菌的一种，寄生在鳞翅目昆虫的幼体中，被害的幼虫冬季钻入土内，逐渐形成菌核，夏季从菌核或死虫的身体上长出菌体的繁殖器官来，形状像草，所以叫冬虫夏草。可入药。简称虫草。
